ICMM Overview

MSMEs (Micro, Small, & Medium Enterprises) are pillars of economies around the world, and they contribute to economic growth and employment generation and introduce innovative offerings and processes in the marketplace. It is observed that over the last few years, small businesses have been going global. “Local to Global” in this context is about scaling up small businesses beyond domestic borders and expanding them to international markets. Exploring new opportunities in global markets provides a new revenue stream and increases brand awareness globally.

One of the major benefits to MSMEs is due to the technological advancements as they reduce barriers to international trade. The adoption of e-commerce systems, digital marketing strategies, social media, and advanced data analytics helps small businesses grow globally. While venturing into global markets benefits MSMEs, there are many challenges as well as opportunities. These include developing flexibility to adapt to new markets; having a visionary leadership with a willingness and motivation to expand globally; understanding of entering international markets through joint ventures vis-à-vis strategic alliance; crafting branding strategies for international audiences; impact of international currency fluctuations and risk management in trade; conflict resolution in cross-cultural small business teams; digital transformation strategies for small businesses; regenerative business strategies for small businesses; labor market dynamics and operating across borders; and the role of language and cultural sensitivity when small business go global.

While organizations and the marketplace work in this direction to convert challenges into opportunities, MSMEs also require assistance and support in expanding internationally. Particularly, when small businesses go global, issues such as understanding complex legal aspects, international regulations, and global trade agreements and adhering to international quality and process standards require special attention. Government bodies and policies can play an essential role in supporting MSMEs through funding opportunities, support for capital requirements, and creating policies that will ease doing business beyond the domestic border.

ICMM 2025 intends to explore these interesting questions and contribute to the research on MSMEs by creating a platform for dialogue and engagement between researchers, entrepreneurs, professionals, and policymakers. In this regard, the Indian Institute of Management Amritsar, India, in collaboration with The Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship, Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, USA, presents the 4th International Conference on Management of MSMEs 2025 under the theme of “Advancing and Assisting Small Businesses for Global Impact”.

We invite the academic community, practitioners, and policy-makers to participate in the ICMM 2025 conference and join hands with the Institute of Management Amritsar, India, in the efforts to transform Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises. Welcome to Amritsar, India, in January 2025.
